Summer in the DC Area-Sunshine, Boating Safety, and Easy Day Trips

As real estate professionals who live and work in the Washington, DC area, we know how special summertime can be here. From waterfront adventures to scenic escapes just a short drive away, there’s no shortage of ways to enjoy the season. Whether you’re a longtime local or new to the area, we’ve put together a guide to help you make the most of summer—safely and memorably.

As most of you know, one our favorite warm-weather activities is exploring the Chesapeake Bay with Bruno!

With the Potomac River, Chesapeake Bay, and countless lakes nearby, boating is a favorite summer pastime for a lot of you as well!

But before you set sail, it’s important to brush up on a few key safety practices:

  • Wear a Life Jacket: This is the most important safety measure. Make sure everyone on board has a properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket.
  • Check the Weather: Summer storms can develop quickly. Always check the forecast before heading out and be prepared to return to shore if conditions change.
  • Stay Sober: Operating a boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs is not only illegal—it’s dangerous. Designate a sober captain.
  • Know the Rules: Review local boating laws and navigation rules. If you’re renting a boat, ask for a safety briefing.
  • Be Prepared: Bring sunscreen, plenty of water, a first aid kit, and a fully charged phone or marine radio for emergencies.

More of a land lover? Well, here are a few of our favorite destinations—all within a couple of hours from DC—that offer a mix of relaxation, adventure, and local charm:

  • Annapolis, Maryland: Just about an hour from DC, Annapolis is a historic waterfront town known for its sailing culture, seafood restaurants, and colonial architecture. Take a boat tour of the Chesapeake Bay, stroll along Main Street, or visit the U.S. Naval Academy.
  • Great Falls Park (VA & MD): For breathtaking views and outdoor adventure, Great Falls Park is a must. Located along the Potomac River, the park offers hiking trails, picnic areas, and dramatic waterfalls. It’s a great spot for families, photographers, and nature lovers.
  • Solomons Island, Maryland: This quiet coastal town is perfect for a laid-back day by the water. Enjoy kayaking, visit the Calvert Marine Museum, or dine at one of the many waterfront restaurants. It’s a peaceful retreat with a maritime vibe.
  • Shenandoah National Park, Virginia: If you’re craving mountain air, head west to Shenandoah. The Skyline Drive offers panoramic views, and there are trails for every skill level. Pack a picnic and spend the day exploring waterfalls, wildlife, and wildflowers.
  • National Harbor, Maryland: Closer to home, and just over the Potomac River from Alexandria, National Harbor offers a mix of entertainment, shopping, and dining. Ride the Capital Wheel for views of the Potomac. Pro tip-take a water taxi from Old Town Alexandria.

Whether you’re drawn to the water or prefer to keep your feet on solid ground, summer invites us all to slow down, savor the moment, and reconnect—with nature, with loved ones, and with ourselves. We hope you take full advantage of everything this vibrant region has to offer during this beautiful season.

And if your summer plans include a move—whether it’s to a waterfront property, a home with a bigger backyard, or a new neighborhood—we’d love to help you find the perfect fit.

Stay safe, and…

Always remember, we’re here for you!
